The ruins of the Khazar fortress built in VII-IX century BC are preserved near Semikarakorsk on an island formed by the Salak Channel and small rivers. The island and the fortress are rather mysterious places, as well as the Khazar state itself that flourished for several centuries but did not survive the struggle with the Pechenegs and the Prince of Kiev Svyatoslav.

The Khibiny Mountains on the Kola Peninsula are relatively young, they are only 350 million years old. And they are relatively low - no higher than 1,200 meters (the top is Yudychvumchorr), although they still grow by several millimeters each year. The history of the reclamation of Khibiny looks more like a history of struggle against them - the mountains are very stubborn.

There are hundreds of lakes, as if pearl beads of different shapes and sizes were scattered across the land. This comparison does not seem fanciful, if you remember that pure crystalline salt has been valued since ancient times almost like pearls. The largest of the pearls is the Baskunchak Lake.

When apatites, or rather the worlds largest deposits of apatite-nepheline ore, were found in Khibiny, progress came to the Kola Peninsula. Mines and the village of Khibinogorsk appeared, a mining-processing factory added to mines. Then the village grew into a town of Kirovsk, and another city was built nearby and called quite simply - Apatity.

Our choice, our opinion
New Yorks Lark Play Development Center & Moscows Lyubimovka Festival recently conspired to have several great American plays be translated and adapted for the Russian stage. I was tapped to translate and adapt Arthur Kopits Wings. After Arthur and the other playwrights participating in the workshop flew in, we took my first draft and worked on the adaptation together, alongside director Daniel Romanov and a wonderful cast with the great Varvara Pushkarskaya in the lead.
