Market of Used Cars Sets a Record
November 1, 2010 23:20

“AutoStat” statistics agency has summarized first six months of Russian car market and is ready to show some interesting figures. During first six months Russians reregistered about 1.94 millions of used cars, which is 400 thousand cars more, that during the same period of the previous year, and only 50 thousand cars less, that in 2008, notable for extremely high activity of the car market. Furthermore, used cars are still cheaper, than in 2008, while new cars are 5.4% more expensive, than in 2009.

In case such dynamics in used car market continues, the number of transactions by the end of this financial year will be 15% higher, than in the previous year, which, in its turn, showed 29% decrease in car trading compared to 2008, which was heaven for car dealers. During first six months of 2008, Russian registered about 1.99 million of used cars, and remaining six months have brought 2.28 million registrations of used cars, making it 4.27 million used cars, registered during the whole year. As for 2009, only 3.38 million used cars were registered during 12 months, with 1.54 million in the first half-year period, and 1.83 – in second.

Statistics of “AutoStat” lists the bestseller among used cars – “Lada” automobiles with over 1.4 million of these cars sold during 2009. Second place went to “Toyota” with 351.9 thousand cars, and “Nissan” occupied the third position with 138 thousands cars.

According to the data of the committee of car manufacturers of the Association of European Businesses, sales of new passenger and light commercial vehicles added 3% (23.3 thousand) in the first six months of 2010, compared to the same period of 2009. Between January and September 2010, Russians bought 1.32 million new cars, which is almost 20% more, that in 2009.

In Russia used car market suffered from the crisis much less, than the market of new cars, deputy director of “AutoStat” agency says. Sales of used cars went down only during the peak of the crisis, and then started recovering. Moreover, this market is much less dependent on credit financing, which almost stopped, when the crisis has struck.

Chief promoting factor of used car sales growing is their price, which is much lower, than that of new ones, owners of an automobile showroom say. Used cars with low mileage are a very cost-efficient buy, since new cars lose 30% of their value immediately after being sold.

Another used vehicle-selling company has following statistics: in December 2008 prices on used cars have lost 15% compared to September 2008, then in December 2009 they gained 5%, and 5% more in October 2010. Most significant reduction is price was registered for vehicles, costing less than 1 million rubles. At the same time prices on new cars during 2010 have gone only up – average prices on a passenger vehicle added 5.4% compared to average prices of the previous year.

Experts believe that the prices will keep growing, because double value added tax, which car dealers had to pay until recently, however, amendments to the Tax Code have eliminated this problem.
