ICQ Servers will be Located in Moscow
December 10, 2010 16:44

Mail.ru company is ready to transfer ICQ servers to Moscow. This may cause several problems for alternative ICQ clients users.

The number of ICQ users is reducing. Over the last year its audience decreased by 28%. At the same time the number of alternative ICQ clients has doubled. This facts became known with the release of the documents of Mail.ru Group.

This information was published on snipper.ru site. Moreover, the published material contain hosts files of icq.com that displayed changes in traffic routing that could be associated with the possible servers relocation in Russia. Accroding to the released documents, the domain ICQ named are forwarded to the IP-address of the Mail.ru company, that is located in Moscow. The working adresses hasn't changed yet — all the users are still working through the AOL servers of the ICQ ex-owner, located in the U.S.

According to Aleksei Karpov, expert on technical support, this means that company is testing Russian server, prepearing ground for the transposition of all main functions from the American server.

The Mail.ru Group refused to confirm the authenticity of the documents. "I am not going to confirm or deny any informaion, since, according to our policy, we do not comment on rumours", — said the representative of the Russian Mail.ru Group shareholders.

This issue about server transposition began to be discussed immediately with the purchase of the servers (in July, 2010), according to Gazeta.ru. Several transfer variants have been discussed but there is still no final decision. According to Alexander Baulin, Chief Editor of "PC World", this transfer will save money on maintenance and will provide all the best control on this project. Even the remote access has almost the same features it's better to move the server to Russia and be shure that American departments have no access to them. Moreover, these changes will give an opportunity to react faster, for example, when spreading of any encrypted traffic such as any call for national disobedience campaign could be blocked immediately.

The leaked Mail.ru documents also shows the real number of the service users. Thus, at last 47,9 million people use ICQ every month.

ICQ is an instant messaging computer program, which was first developed and popularized by the Israeli company Mirabilis, then bought by America Online, and since April 2010 owned by Digital Sky Technologies, an investment firm based in Moscow, Russia. The company is a major investor in the Russian, CIS and Eastern European internet markets. It owns stakes in various internet companies that together account for over 70 percent of all hits on the Russian-speaking Internet.

According to Yury Milner, DST co-owner and general director, the purchase of ICQ was a strategic move in the development of business in Russia and Eastern Europe, the long history of the ICQ brand and the significant base of loyal users give the company an excellent chance to strengthen our positions in the region.

Although largely forgotten in English-speaking countries, ICQ remains widely popular in Central Europe, Russia, and Israel.
