Businessmen and Politics
July 5, 2011 14:40

Russian politics and business become more interrelated. Russian businessman Mikhail Prokhorov recently headed the party Pravoe Delo. Why Prokhorov decided to become a politician and to head a party?

Prokhorov's appearance in this sphere is a theme of discussions among politicans and experts. There is a question: why does he need it?

The first  version says, that this step will allow the businessman to operate without any problems in Russia and to multiply the capital. But not everyone agrees. "I don't see any business project plan and I believe that this is just an active position of Prokhorov", says Vladislav Inozemtsev,  director of the Center for Postindustrial Studies, in an interview to the Deutsche Welle magazine.

Is it power, that gives money or money, that allow to rule? The German magazine Deutsche Welle tries to analyze the situation.

According to Stanislaus Radkevich, the director general of the agency PR-3000, an expert on the political elite, Mikhail Prokhorov was obliged to head the party. "He is not interested in doing this. He is a businessman, not a politician. And now he is engaged in this sphere, just like Abramovich had been forced to do the same", says Radkevich in an interview to
the Deutsche Welle. According to the expert, this order was made by the ruling tandem.

At the same time Vladislav Inozemtsev insists, that he doesn't believe that Prokhorov had been hired by the government, he says that was Prokhorov's decision. "Perhaps he received some advice, but I believe that Mikhail Prokhorov is an independent person and his decision is independent as well", says Vladislav Inozemtsev. The political scientist explained his point of view with the fact that Putin has not commenter Prokhorov's arrival to the party.

A niche, taken by the party, led by Mikhail Prokhorov is located on the right side of the policital front. According to Radkevich, an idea of the ruling tandem is to give a vent to emotions of liberal-democratic part of the electorate. The direct competitor of the party could be Parnas party, but the opposition couldn't manage to receive a registration. At the same time the Pravoe Delo party,  represented by Prokhorov, has not only an interesting leader, but also a financial resource and government support.

The result from the rebranding of the Pravoe Delo party is seen by experts in different ways. Vladislav Inozemtsev supposes, that Prokhorov hopes to lead the party in the Duma.

Stanislav Radkevich, by contrast, is almost certain that Mikhail Prokhorov was instructed to be as active, as possible, to let people, who sympathize the right-wing forces to implement their right to vote.

Businessmen in politics life are appreciated in Russia, but not always. The most striking example is  Mikhail Khodorkovsky's case. He was imprisoned as soon as he began to express his political ambitions. Vladislav Inozemtsev believes that Prokhorov has no risk, as was in the case of Khodorkovsky. Everything depends on tactic behavior that he will choose.
