The Russian Car Market Decreases
July 12, 2015 22:52

The sales of new cars and light commercial vehicles (LCVs) in Russia decreased by 36.4 percent in the first half of 2015, as compared with the same period of last year, and amounted to 782.1 thousand cars. This was stated in the study by the Association of European Businesses (AEB).

At the same time 140.2 thousand cars have been sold in June, which is 29.7 percent less than in the same period of last year. According to the Chairman of the AEB Automobile Manufacturers Committee Joerg Schreiber, there is no reason to relax, we should mention that the decline in the market in relation to the corresponding period of last year is less dramatic than in previous months, beginning from February.

“Things could be even worse but for the two factors of state policy that support the market. The first one is lowering the key rate of the Central Bank, the second - the continuing state support of buyers of new cars (that has been increased recently) both by subsidizing the rates of retail funding and by supporting the renovation of second-hand and very old cars” - Schreiber noted.

However, the sales forecast of AEB for the year has become worse: the market of passenger cars and LCVs will decline by 36 percent – down to 2.49 million vehicles. In the beginning of this year AEB predicted the fall of the Russian market by 24 percent.

In June 2014 it was reported that the Russian car market was experiencing difficulties against the backdrop of falling demand for trucks and passenger cars. The sales of passenger cars and LCVs in Russia, according to the data of the Association of European Businesses, dropped by 37.6 percent in May, as compared with May 2014 - down to 125,800 machines. 641,900 vehicles have been sold on the Russian market in the five months of this year, which is 37.7 per cent less than in the same period of last year.

In addition, truck sales in January-May decreased by 47 percent – down to 20.3 thousand. The cars that were sold best of all included KamAZ, 6,6 thousand units have been sold in five months, and GAZ (2.5 thousand units). The third line is taken by Scania, its sales fell stronger than the market - by 60 percent, down to 1,042 cars. The fourth line belongs to the Japanese Hino: 813 units have been sold.
