Egypt Became the Largest Buyer of Russian Food Products
February 20, 2018 17:18

Egypt became the largest buyer of Russian food products, for the first time ahead of China. This is reported by RBC with reference to the data of the Russian Export Center.

In 2017, Egypt  imported food products from Russia for 1.73 billion US dollars, which is almost 44 percent more than in 2016. For comparison, China's food imports amounted to 1.71 billion US dollars. It grew by 11 percent to the previous year. In value terms, 82 percent of supplies to Egypt were made by wheat. Russia sent 7.8 million tons of this grain to the North African country, which is approximately equal to a quarter of wheat exports from the Russian Federation. The total import of wheat to Egypt was 11.2 million tons.

In the long term, Egypt could become a profitable market for Russian poultry meat, as there is now an overproduction of this product in Russia. Total exports of food in 2017 from Russia increased by almost a quarter and amounted to 19 billion US dollars.
