Moscow Buying Habits: the Number of Whole Food Stores Increased 3.5 Times
December 29, 2018 00:39

The number of whole food stores in Moscow has increased 3.5 times during the three years. The number of farm food and healthy food stores in Moscow has increased 3.5 times over the past three years, having reached a total of 714 outlets, as “Kommersant” reports, referring to the survey conducted by “Knight Frank”.

The reasons for the sector growth were the transfer of consumer interest to small-format stores and the trend for healthy food. We are talking about the number of whole food stores in the street retail format: small stores on the streets. Over the three years, health food chains have occupied a share of 15.8% among all grocery stores in street retail; in 2015, this figure amounted to 6.7%.

The Director of Street Retail Direction of “Knight Frank” Viktoria Kamlyuk notes that the number of such outlets will only grow in the next three years, but it is more difficult for such networks to enter the shopping centres. “The essence of farmers’ shops is the sale of their own products with a limited range of products, it’s more difficult for them to enter the shopping centres as independent tenants”, she said.

The Director of the Retail Premises Department at CBRE, Marina Malakhatko, in her turn, predicts that whole food stores will develop in various ways, with regard to real estate formats.

“Farmer’s shops are interested in attracting a large traffic of solvent buyers, and on this basis they place stores in shopping centres, street retail premises, sites on the territories of modern markets or in specialized gastronomic spaces and food halls”, as the newspaper quotes her words.
