Moscow entered the top 10 cities in the world with the best ecosystem for startups for the first time. This is evidenced by the rating of the research company StartupBlink, which covered more than a thousand cities and one hundred countries.
The San Francisco Bay Area topped the list of the cities with the best ecosystem for startups in the world. This is where Silicon Valley is located. The top 10 included five other US cities, as well as London, Tel Aviv and Berlin.
Compared to 2017, when the previous rating was published, Moscow rose by 4 positions, and entered the top 10. As in 2017, the best for startups among the Russian cities are Moscow, St. Petersburg and Kazan. At the same time, in the world ranking St. Petersburg jumped 52 positions up and took the 79-th place, and Kazan lost its 31-st position and fell to the 230-th place.
In the global ranking by country, Russia climbed 3 lines and took the 15-th place. Ireland and Denmark became the neighbors of Russia in the ranking (14 and 16 places respectively).
The United States, Britain, Canada, Israel, Australia, the Netherlands, Sweden, Switzerland, Germany and Spain entered the top ten countries with the best ecosystem for mining.
The drafters of the rating note that one of the main problems of the Russian ecosystem is the leak of startups from Russia. StartupBlink experts cite Telegram as an example and note that many accelerators abroad are interested in entrepreneurs from Russia.
According to the authors of the rating, in the current geopolitical situation, it has become more difficult for Russian startups to interact with foreign partners: difficulties arise both in obtaining visas for a business trip and in organizing money transfers.
At the same time, startups in Russia feel the active support of the state. StartupBlink considers Skolkovo to be its symbol.
The authors of the study called Moscow "the global city of the future." StartupBlink noted that as of 2019, 4,500 startups and such world-famous IT companies as Kaspersky Lab, InfoWatch, ABBYY, Yandex, Acronis and Mail.ru Group are based in Moscow.
How the rating was compiled
StartupBlink considers any company that uses innovative solutions to be a startup.
When compiling the rating, the experts used only the data that can be counted. The number of start-ups, including unicorns, accelerators, coworkings and events for entrepreneurs in the country and city, the quality of business (website traffic, the number of clients at companies, the impact of a startup on the ecosystem) and the business climate in the country were taken into account.
StartupBlink did not conduct interviews to maintain objectivity.
