Sistema-Biotech Developed a Coronavirus Test that Allows Finding out the Result in Two Hours
March 19, 2020 10:25

The company of billionaire Vladimir Yevtushenkov,  Sistema-Biotech, has developed a coronavirus test that allows  finding out the result in two hours. In terms of accuracy, it "surpasses the analogues currently used in Russia," a representative of AFK Sistema said.

Sistema-Biotech, owned by Vladimir Yevtushenkov, has developed an express test for a new coronavirus infection, Vedomosti reports citing Sistema’s managing partner Artem Sirazutdinov. He said that in the near future Sistema-Biotech would submit a registration dossier to Rospotrebnadzor for the development.

If the agency registers a new test, its production may begin in the near future, Sirazutdinov told the newspaper. He noted that "negotiations have been held with several partners about a possible contract for manufacturing of these tests."

Sistema does not see this project as commercial, Sirazutdinov says. The cost of the test is about 1000 rubles, an interlocutor familiar with the details of production in Sistema-Biotech informed. According to Sirazutdinov, the result can be obtained within two hours. He specified that the test can be passed in public and private medical institutions, including the Medsi clinics owned by AFK Sistema. The accuracy of the test is 90–95%, and in this indicator the test “exceeds the analogues currently used in Russia,” the managing partner emphasized.

Sistema-Biotech began to work in 2019 and specializes in biotechnology, for example, molecular genetic research. The company is also working on creating an express test that gives a result in 30 minutes. According to Sirazutdinov, it will determine the presence of the virus in humans by saliva - in contrast to the polymerase chain reaction analysis, when a throat or nose swab is most often taken. The company's specialists have experience in genetic research and “developing systems for the detection of various viruses,” in particular those associated with acute respiratory infections, the managing partner of AFK Sistema said.

Now in Russia, the test for coronavirus can only be passed through health workers or in public health facilities. In Moscow, the analysis is taken by the Central Clinical Hospital of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Kommunarka and the Infectious Clinical Hospital No. 1. Testing is carried out if a person came from epidemiologically disadvantaged countries or came into contact with those who returned from abroad and were infected for two weeks, the newspaper points out with reference to data from the Ministry of Health. State studies are carried out in four hours without taking into account the time for delivery of biomaterial to the laboratory, which is now only in Novosibirsk. There is no information on how accurate the tests used in Russia are.

Representatives of Rospotrebnadzor, the Ministry of Health, Roszdravnadzor and the headquarters for the control of the new coronavirus, Deputy Prime Minister Tatyana Golikova, did not respond to a request from Vedomosti.
