March 14, 2014 the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts opened "The Gallant Games" exhibition.
Rococo art, one of the major artistic events in Western Europe of 18th century is known as "gallant style," while its heyday as the "gallant age." In the visual arts, the gallant ideal found his highest embodiment in the paintings by Antoine Watteau and Francois Boucher, Nicolas Lancret and Jean-Honore Fragonard and others. But in order to truly understand the 18th century and see it in its real light it is necessary to appeal to the engravings, as in them the "gallant century" is presented in its entirety and diversity.
For the first time, Russian public will be shown Rococo engravings from French graphic funds, one of the best in the collection of the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts.
These are etchings, colored aquatint and pencil style engravings from famous collections of Baratynskys, Bobrinskys, Basninyns and other collectors. Altogether the exposure will feature about 60 works, including "Goodbyes" (1777) and "The Happy Accident of the Swing" (1768) by Nicolas Delaunay; "The event at the Ball" (1775) by Antoine-Jean Duclos; "Evening" (1740s) by Francois Antoine Aveline; "German Dance" (1769) by Gilles Demarteau and others. Engravings, combined in such sections as "Gallant Society in the Park", "The Theater", "Fashion Whims", "The Salon" and "Boudoir" will acquaint viewers with one of the refined eras in history.
The exhibition is supervised by Natalia Vedeneyeva, the senior researcher of the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts.
The exhibition will be open until June 1, 2014, according to the Pushkin Museum.
