The Centre for Contemporary Art “Winzavod” will host an exhibition “Best of Russia/Best Photos of Russia 2013” from March 27 to May 18, 2014. The large-scale exhibition located in the two biggest halls of the Centre includes 340 images made in different parts of the country: from Moscow to Anadyr, from Beslan to Murmansk, from Kaliningrad to Ussuriysk.
The authors from other countries participated in the project this year for the first time. All in all, more than 20,000 images were sent for the exhibition. The photos presented at the exhibition will show an eventful year in the life of our country. One of the most important innovations in the project is the creation of the section “Special Topic” which will be updated every year.
“Special Topic” of the project “Best Photos of Russia – 2013” is “Weddings and Funerals”. These two customs reflect the preserved archaic traditions best of all and show the depth of historical and ethnographic roots. The photos sent to this section show the national cultural diversity of our country: a festive feast in Dagestan and preparations of a bride in Severodvinsk, the footage of the farewell with the director Aleksei Balabanov and a deserted cemetery in Chukotka.
The most extensive project is “People. Events. Everyday life.” 147 photographs feature the most important events of the past year in Russia: the flood in the Far East, the Olympic torch relay, the volcanic eruption of Ploskiy Tolbachik, the life of illegal immigrants. This section presents the works by Mikhail Dzhaparidze (AP agency), Konstantin Zavrazhin (Rossiyskaya Gazeta), Andrey Chepakin (Nevskoe Vremya), Vasiliy Maksimov (AFP Agency) and many others.
The category “Nature” is traditionally the most vivid and impressive one. The views of all parts of our country are presented here: the North Caucasus Mountains, the volcanoes of Kamchatka, the magnitude of a hydroelectric power plant in Amur region, the icebergs near the coasts of the Franz Josef Archipelago.
The visitors can also see the amazingly emotional close-up photographs - epic landscapes shot from a height of 1000 meters.
The category “Architecture” shows the monument of Mother-patroness protecting the old houses of the city of Cheboksary and the harsh reality of the metallurgical plant “Severstal”, and the “heavenly” lighthouse in Vladivostok; the cracks of residential districts of St. Petersburg and the “Red Trio” at a gas station in Chelyabinsk.
The category “Style” contains elegant and provocative photographs.
The pictures by famous authors working with the best fashion editions (Andrey Davydovskiy Marat Mukhonkin, etc.) and the pictures by novice photographers are side by side to each other, and now, according to their level of performance, it is safe to say that the names of the young artists will soon occupy a worthy place among the masters.
