The 150th anniversary of Alice in Wonderland is celebrated in a big way in Moscow. Visit to an ancient mansion in the downtown turns into a journey across the fairy tale worlds created by Lewis Carroll. Cheshire Cat disappears and appears in a huge mirror — here is "the chamber of dreams" and Barmaglot's skeleton, the Mauritian drawing room and the rare "porcelain book" from Alice in Wonderland. Screenings of the British cinema, meetings with mathematicians, exhibitions of modern illustrators of the famous fairy tale, literary soirees, games of the Victorian era and many other interesting things take place here.
The Saltykov-Chertkovs' Mansion daily receives visitors of the exhibition dedicated to the 150th anniversary of Alice in Wonderland. There is a good reason for the place choice: it is assumed that Lewis Carroll visited the library located here during his trip to Russia at the end of the 19th century.
For the period of the exhibition this mansion has been turned into a true illusory world, where you will find kinetic bowls radiating magic light, a gigantic balloon and the biggest kaleidoscope in Europe.
The Gothic Hall of the mansion presents all canonical illustrations to Alice in Wonderland in a multimedia format and installations based on stained-glass windows that decorate the chapel of the Darsberry Village, where Lewis Carrol was born. In the Chamber of Dreams you will see the first screen version of the fairy tale, which was released in 1903.
Both children and adults are going to enjoy this fairy tale realm. Kids can enterntain here on their own: get inside a mirror capsule and look into the giant kaleidoscope. Meanwhile parents can relish British-style tea drinking with cupcakes or explore a book market with practically all editions of Alice in Wonderland.
Interactive excursions are held here every hour. Besides, visitors can participate in the quests Alice in the Country of Riddles or The Ball of Ghosts in Victorian England at 4 pm and 8 pm.
The fairy tale illusion exhibition runs in the Saltykov-Chertkovs' Estate at the address 7, Myasnitskaya Street near the Lubyanka metro station till April 30, 2016.
