October, 24th, 2010 saw the closing ceremony of the First Open Ecological Film Festival ''Green Carnation'' on Square of Arts in Sochi.
The festival organized by Organizing committee «Sochi 2014» jointly with Foundation for development of cultural, educational and ecological initiatives «Green carnation» and Social Programs Foundations has been included into the program of the Cultural Olympic Games “Sochi 2010-2014” launched in honour of the upcoming Winter Olympics 2014.
Over three days of the ''Green carnation'' festival it screened 15 competitive films and 13 films out-of-competition.
The jury of the festival’s competitive program was headed by the film director Konstantin Lopushansky, whereas the selection of films was carried out by a program commission chaired by film expert Vyacheslav Shmyrov, the art director of the festival.
Grand Prix and the festival Diploma went to the film Polar Explorer (Polyarnik) (director Nikolay Volkov, producer Vyacheslav Telnov) based on scenario by Vladimir Strugatsky.
The film River Patrol (director Alexander Slobodsky, producer Maxim Carmen) was awarded with the Festival Diploma “for its ability to feel the Petersburg peculiarity of the ecology of soul and city.
Lightning Killer. Chasing the Fire-Ball (director Ivan Makarov, producer Alexey Gorovatsky) got the Festival Diploma “for continuing the best traditions of national popular science films”.
The jury also conferred Festival Diploma on Free People (Vol’nye Lyudi) (director Svetlana Stasenko, producer Arnold Giskin) “for ability to convey specific world-view of White Sea coast-dwellers and harmonious co-existence of man and nature.
Two films Amur tiger in the Third Millennium (director and producer Vasily Solkin) and Musk-Ox Comes Back (director Vasily Sarana, producer Riho Vjastrik) were awarded “for unique shooting in unique conditions”.
The leading lady of Solyaris (1972) Natalya Bondarchuk, the star of Amphibian Man (1962) Vladimir Korenev, and the actor of Moscow Art Theatre Stanislav Lyubshin received honourable awards of the Green Carnation festival for bringing up ecological attitude to life by cinematic means during the epoch when the very notion of ecology was not known to general public.
Ecological Film Festival Green Carnation is the first part of the large-scale cultural and ecological project Green Art. The project is designed for four years: 2011 will become the year of theatre (Theatre of Ecological Aesthetics, Theatre of Ecological Fashion and Children's Puppet Festival “Carnival of Animals”), 2012 will be the year of music (Ecological Festival “Music on Water”) and 2013 will be the year of museums (Modern Ecological Art and Photo Festival, ecological art tour Masterpieces of Russian Art in Sochi Streets).
Inflatable spherical pavilions of different size were used as cinema halls at the festival Green Carnation. Thanks to this technology part of Sochi street space was turned into unique spherical cinema halls, which at the same time created unique scenery with visual art objects. The most state-of-the-art technology Full Dome Theatre was used for this purpose.
Green Carnation festival took place in the frameworks of the Cultural Olympic Games Sochi 2014 - a global 4-year project of Organizing Committee Sochi 2014.
