The 11th Andrei Tarkovsky International Film Festival MIRROR will take place in the cities of Ivanovo, Yuryevets, Plyos and Kineshma from 13 to 18 June.
The viewers will watch the films of international feature and documentary film competitions, as well as short-length and animated films, the retrospective of Andrei Konchalovsky, the traditional program "Tarkovsky Context" and contemporary Russian cinema in the program "Our own".
Timed to the 85th anniversary since the birthday of Andrei Tarkovsky, the festival is opening at the Levitan Hall in Plyos today, June 13.
Mirror Starts in Moscow
The main venue for the film festival will be the city of Ivanovo, where screenings of competitive programs and films will be held at the Formula A113 cinema, on the roof of the Silver City shopping mall (32, 8 March Street) and at the Lodz cinema (120A, Lezhnevskaya Street) .
By tradition, the district towns of Plyos, Kineshma, and Yurevets will not be left aside. Other festival venues are the "Roof" project in the "Silver City", the NIMLOFT project, and Levitan Cultural Center in Plyos, and Andrei Tarkovsky Cultural Center in Yuryevets. The closing ceremony will take place on Sunday, June 18, at the Ivanovo Philharmonic.
In addition, for the first time this year the festival has extended beyond the Ivanovo Region. Thus, the 5th International Research Conference "Tarkovsky. Dreams" took place in Moscow a day before the festival opening. In addition to film critics, the conference was attended by poets, psychoanalysts, specialists in the field of contemporary art and even video game researchers. Film lovers in Moscow will have an opportunity to watch a number of festival films. They will be demonstrated in the October cinema as a kind of "an echo" of the Mirror Film Festival.
Films from Berlin, Toronto and Cannes
As the festival program director, Andrey Plakhov, said at a press conference in Moscow, this year the geography of the contest program is as wide as ever: "There are films from India, Croatia, Germany, Israel, Korea, France, and Senegal taking part in the competition. The vast majority of these films are dedicated to the problems of youth in the challenging modern world. Perhaps, it is the youngest festival ever in terms of issues tackled upon, the participants and the course into the future."
Competition Programs
It is a reminder that the festival will traditionally hold two competitions: the main one, among films from around the world, and the documentary contest, Mirror of ArtDocFest.
The international competition Mirrors will present 10 films, including Felicite by Alain Gomis, the winner of the Grand Prix of the Berlinale Jury; White Nights by Thomas Arslan ("The Silver Bear" for Best Actor); Yourself and Yours by Hon Sansu from South Korea, and other films.
Russia will be represented with The Closeness by Kantemir Balagov, a graduate of Alexander Sokurov Studio at the Kabardino-Balkaria University. The debut work of the 26-year-old director was marked by the FIPRESCI prize of the Special Perspective program at the Cannes Film Festival.
The documentary competition will feature eight films, by both classics and aspiring film makers from Russia, Bosnia, Armenia, Estonia, and Belarus. The list of competitors includes participants of the official programs of the IDFA (Amsterdam) and Visions du Reel (Nyon) festivals, the world’s most prestigious documentary films.
Young Mexican Heading the Jury
This year, the Mirror is having the youngest jury chairman in the festival history, 38-year-old Mexican director Amat Escalante.
Tarkovsky: Now Online Too
This year the Internet will be actively used at the MIRROR Festival. For the first time the competition “Tarkovsky Online" has been announced. It is aimed at finding on the web bright examples of unique author’s picture of the world. The winners will be selected by young film critics under the guidance of the outstanding Russian film director and producer Valery Todorovsky.
