Buryatia Will Listen to The Voice of Nomads
July 11, 2017 19:52

The 9th International Music Festival "The Voice of Nomads" will be held in the tourist complex "Steppe Nomad" in the village of Atsagat, 50 km away from Ulan-Ude on July 14 and 15. This year the festival is bringing together musicians from Brazil, Mali, Spain, Korea, Mongolia, Bashkiria, Yakutia, Ukraine, Moscow and Buryatia.

For the first time Buryatia will be visited by Jambinai, a famous band in the East Asian underground. Buryatia will be represented by rapper Khatkhur Zu, Badma-Khanda Ayusheeva, and Namgar.

The large-scale open-air will be preceded with the special program "The Voice of Nomad OFF” at the Buryat Philharmonic in the city of Ulan-Ude. On July 11, the audience will enjoy Buryat folk songs interacting with electronic music and modern visual effects.

The international music festival "The Voice of Nomads" has been annually held in Buryatia since 2009. The festival concept is based on the idea of ethno-futurism, that is, a special approach to the ethnic diversity of culture, which looks into the future rather than the past.

In this context, the nomads are a symbol of dynamics, movement and freedom.

According to the organizers, the geography of the festival participants has been expanding every year. In the eight-year history of the festival it has attracted bands from Buryatia, Tuva, China, Mongolia, Ukraine, Hungary, Norway, USA, Japan, Belgium, Brazil, France, and so on.

The Voice of Nomads 2017: Music,  Freedom, and Love

Over its rich history, the festival, like a real nomad, has changed a number of locations, having visited all theatrical venues of the city of Ulan Ude. In 2016, the organizers decided that it was necessary for the festival development to go beyond the city and arrange an open-air in real steppe. Thus the Voice of Nomads moved to the tourist complex "Steppe Nomad", which is located in the Atsagat Village of Zaigraevsky District in the Republic of Buryatia.

This year the Voice of Nomads, has traditionally prepared a diverse line-up to please both fans of particular music genres, and admirers of authentic music traditions of various peoples, as well as those who love discovering new styles and, of course, connoisseurs of world music in its best manifestations.

July 14 will see a concert of SunSay with philosophical texts set to mix of reggae, jazz, funk, folk, hip-hop, and electronic rhythms. Another key attraction of the festival this year is the performance of Kalinov Bridge, a legend of the Russian rock, on July 15.

Visitors will also listen to the rhythms of the Brazilian samba performed by the Casuarina band from Rio de Janeiro. Jambinai, a famous band from Seoul will introduce Korean post-rock to Buryat audience, and the band Magnolian from Mongolia will perform romantic indie rock. Specially for those who were stunned by the power of the Volga duet from Moscow last year, as well as those who missed the mesmerizing performance of Angela Manukyan, the band will perform at the festival for the second time.

The traditional block of Buryat musicians this time will be represented by rapper Khatkhur Zu, everyone’s favourite Badma-Handa, and “White Cloud” Namgar.

In addition to the main music program, there will be other entertainment areas on the territory of the complex. Visitors will find here folklore groups, taste traditional dishes, purchase souvenirs, ride horses and camels, take pictures in national costumes, and visit the Atsagat Datsan and the House Museum of Aghvan Dorzhiev. Besides, all comers will have a chance to learn playing the Buryat game “March”, embroider with beads traditional Cossack patterns, shoot arrows and perform national dances.

On July 14, the festival program starts at 5 pm and ends at 2 am.

On July 15, the festival program starts at 1 pm and ends at 2 am.

The ticket for two festival days, July 14 and 15, costs 1500 rubles.
