Ural Film Festival Kicks Off in Yekaterinburg
September 4, 2017 14:32

On Saturday, the opening ceremony of the 2nd Ural Film Festival took place in the crowded hall of the cinema-concert theater Cosmos in Yekaterinburg.
The festival is held in the capital of the Urals for the second time, and it has already developed its own traditions. The main tradition is free tickets to all the festival events, which is most amazing nowadays.
The first winner of the festival is Alla Surikova, an outstanding comedian, the film director of the films "The Man from the Boulevard of the Capuchins", "Vanity of Vanities," "Crazy Ones", and "You Will not Leave Me" ... She has been awarded an honorary prize for her loyalty to the genre. During the festival, her evenings will be held and the premiere of her new musical film "Love and Sax" will take place.
As the head of Ural Film Festival, Vladimir Makeranets said, from the very first day of tickets distribution long queues lined up in movie theaters and the Cinema House, with tickets to all the numerous programs of the festival dispersing instantly.
Festival film screening runs at two dozen cinemas in Yekaterinburg and the Sverdlovsk Region.
The audience met the jury chaired by film director Andrei Proshkin. They will watch 11 competitive films and select the best ones. In his speech, Andrei Proshkin expressed his concern over the latest events in the modern Russian art life - from the attempt to set fire to Alexey Uchitel's Studio to the fate of Kirill Serebrennikov and his comrades. The audience supported him with applause.
The opening film "The Day Before" - a stellar contest work by film directors Alexander Kott, Vladimir Kott, Alexander Karpilovsky and Boris Khlebnikov - was warmly received by viewers. "The Day Before" was screened right after the opening ceremony. It was the premiere of the film, which had not been even reviewed by any critics before!
Over the next week, the festival visitors will see over 130 full-length feature films and short films, as well as video versions of six performances by Moscow and St. Petersburg theaters.
11 contest films were selected out of more than one hundred and forty applications. According to the festival program director, the columnist of the "Rossiiskaya Gazeta" Valery Kichin, these are films “of different weight categories, different genres, tempos and rhythms”. There are films that have already harvested a crop of international prizes, such as Arrhythmia by Boris Khlebnikov and Turkish Saddle by Yusup Razykov.
The 2nd Ural Film Festival is going to be more generous for prizes: they will be handed in ten nominations, and the audience will decide about whom to give three of them. The fate of the first statuette was decided immediately – it was presented to brilliant Alla Surikova as the Recognition prize.
“Sudden, touching and responsible!” - Alla Surikova exclaimed in surprise.
In view of the above, the line from the song performed by Kurara band at the opening ceremony - "We need more of good things!" - became quite understandable. Lots of good things have been promised, so take time to watch it all, Yekaterinburg!
