From February 9 to 18, 2018, various venues of Moscow will be hosting the city festival “Moscow Pancake Week” - the most cheerful, long-awaited and colorful winter festival!
This year, vivid entertainment events are planned at 13 venues, which will offer thematic performances, creative master classes, traditional games and pancake week merrymaking, as well as dances, songs, fairs, pancake tasting sessions, contests, quizzes, and what not.
Since 2018 is declared the Year of Theater, the festival program is composed accordingly.
Manezhnaya Square
Manezhnaya Square will become a big stage in the open air and host the theatrical performance Royal Maslenitsa, which is going to engage anyone who feels like it. Visitors will find here a wide range of amusing games, fun and frolic, folk dances, etc.
In addition to the performance, Manezhnaya Square will present the open-air exhibition "12 Maslenitsas". Various exhibits designed to acquaint the public with the traditions of celebrating Maslenitsa (the Pancake Week) will be displayed in special glass stands.
Ploshchad’ Revolutsii
The Revolution Square will be decorated in the spirit of the epoch of Alexander I. And that is not by mere chance, since it was during the reign of that emperor that the tradition of celebrating Maslenitsa acquired its present character. During the festival, the visitors will be entertained by actors wearing full-dress uniforms and tails coats of the 19th century.
Tverskaya Square
An entertainment program in the Tverskaya Square will introduce Moscuvites and tourists to the traditions of Maslenitsa celebrations in Moscow and the Moscow Region. Musicians and theatrical actors will perform here on a stage specially arranged for the occasion.
A creative master class zone will take place on the same site, welcoming all comers to try the basics of wood painting, golden embroidery, making glazed tiles, etc.
Novy Arbat
The New Arbat Street will turn into a place dedicated to various carnivals, both in the domestic and in the world cultures, from singing guisers from the epoch of the foundation the Grand Duchy of Moscow to Moscow and European carnivals of the 20th century.Besides, a large creative workshop will be opened here and train you to make carnival Venetian masks, clown hats, rattling scepters, etc. you’re your own hands.
Among other things, colourful festive marches will take place in the New Arbat Street. They will be stylized as masquerades and carnivals of different countries and invite everyone to join!
Tverskoy Boulevard
An Old Russian fortress will appear in the Tverskoy Boulevard for the occasion. It will host master classes in all kinds of traditional crafts. Folk craftsmen will gladly teach you woodcarving, making thread dolls, leather masks of guisers, etc.
