Several festive events have been prepared for Pancake Week aka Maslenitsa at once in the united museum-reserve of Moscow.
The first event of Shrovetide festivities in the reserve will kick off in the park of the Lublino Estate at noon on February 29. There you will find an interactive festive program with games, contests, winter entertainments and folk amusements. Visitors will have a chance to play the role of mummers and take part in shaking the Maslenitsa dummy, the ritual which is sure to bring happiness to every participant of it.
On the same day, from 1 pm to 5 pm you will find performances of folk bands, folk games and fun entertainments in the Kolomenskoye Museum Reserve. The most active entertainments here will be riding an inflatable sleigh, a horse-drawn carriage and a pony. A competition for the best Maslenitsa Dummy will take place in the same venue, so prepare your creations in advance and bring them for the festival if you want to win valuable prizes. In a special photo area that is going to open here, you will be able to take pictures with hunting and falconry birds. Traditional Russian pancakes, pies, hot tea and souvenirs will be available in fair huts.
If you want to continue the celebrations and merrymaking and bid farewell to Maslenitsa, welcome to the Kolomenskoye Museum Reserve on March 1. Prior to the hot ceremony of burning the big Maslenitsa Dummy, partake in folk outdoor games and enjoy folklore ensembles performing traditional Russian songs, ditties and chants.
On the first day of spring, the festive program will take place on the Big Field near Torgovaya Street from 12 pm to 5 pm.
On the same day, from 1 pm to 3 pm at the Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich Palace, Russian Shrovetide ceremonies will be held and the stuffed Maslenitsa Dummy will be shaken to the accompaniment of live folk music. In addition to that, visitors will be told about the specialty of different days of the Pancake Week.
In the Izmailovo Park, there will be performances of folk music bands as well as traditional fair amusements for visitors: tug of war, stilt walking and jumping in a sack, round dance and fun games. Come here from 1 pm to 4 pm on March 1 to plunge into the festivities and bid farewell to the long Russian winter.
