The foundation of the only Museum of Photography in the Urals was laid in1993, when the government of the Sverdlovsk region took the opinions of local historians and ethnographers into account and abandoned the intention to demolish one of the oldest detached houses in the center of Yekaterinburg that used to be the property of the photographer Benjamin Leontievich Metenkov before the Revolution. The difficult task of creating the exhibition in the cleared building was taken by the History Museum of Yekaterinburg. On August 10, 1998 “Metenkov House" Museum of Photography (branch of the History Museum of Yekaterinburg) opened its doors for the visitors.

The collection of the gallery began to form in 2003, and since its opening the gallery organized and supervised more than 60 exhibitions of Russian and foreign artists working in the techniques of painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, video. The gallery successfully cooperates with the state museums, largest private collections, cultural institutions, educational institutions, charitable foundations.

Over the years of its existence the gallery has developed its own exhibition policy and taken a certain place in the culture and the artistic life of Yekaterinburg. This gallery constantly holds a lot of exhibitions of contemporary artists, sculptors, graphic artists, florists, photographers, as well as exhibitions of children's art.

Cultural Center "Ural" is a unique ultra-modern cultural and recreational complex created under the auspices of the Department of Culture of the Administration of Yekaterinburg. The showrooms of the Center constantly present changing exhibitions.
