Saint Petersburg offers an impressive variety of photography museums illustrating the evolution of the world and Russian photography, technologies, art styles, and photographic equipment. The museum of photographic history and some modern art galleries always wait for the new visitors. 

The museum of photographic history

The museum of photographic history in St. Petersburg opened in 2003. All history of photography is registered here; you can trace the evolution of photographic equipment - from first heavy and huge machines, with difficult settings, up to modern digital cameras. A couple of centuries ago only the richest people could afford their portrait painted by an artist. With the development of photography, science and technical progress photography became more available for the greater number of people. The real golden age of photography began in the early XX century, when photo studios appeared in many cities. The museum remakes their interiors with unchanged puppies and kittens, all photos of those years breeze with mannerism, stiff poses.

State Museum and Exhibition Center for Photography ROSPHOTO

It was established in 2002 by the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation. ROSPHOTO is active in all areas of the modern issues related to photography and image: exhibition, research and educational programs in the field of visual culture. ROSPHOTO holds exhibitions in its showrooms in the center of St. Petersburg and in other cities and regions of Russia and abroad (about 30 exhibitions annually). ROSPHOTO constantly replenishes its unique collection of photographic materials (it has about 10,000 items) illustrating the evolution of the world and Russian photography, technologies, art styles, photographic equipment.

Perinnye Ryady Art Center

It  is a space that holds the exhibitions designed for the new viewers. The “Art Center" supports the thesis "Visiting exhibitions is smart" and follows it, creating deep and at the same time interesting and popular exhibitions. The exhibitions of the "Art Center" have an educational nature, but their main idea is that visiting exhibitions is not the duty of every cultured man, but a great aesthetic pleasure.


Art Center “Pushkinskaya-10"

The history of this Art Center began in 1989, with the appearance of the  squat of independent artists, musicians and others underground activists in the resettled St. Petersburg house on Pushkinskaya Street. Over the 24 years of its creative activity the Art Center "Pushkinskaya-10" has gained international fame, regularly presenting Russian contemporary art at the international art exhibitions and festivals.

Borey Art Center

It was established in 1991 as a fundamentally new structure in the field of art and culture. This is a civil initiative fulfilled by a group of like-minded people whose aim is to build a cultural center the doors of which are open to the artistic initiatives. Borey responds to all genres, trends and directions of art.
