The museum of Moscow Zoo was founded long time ago, but until mid February, 2015 it was opened for general public only on special cultural occasions, like the Museum Night or Cultural Heritage Day. Visitors’ heightened interest in the museum propelled its curators to make the exposition open for general public on permanent basis.
As of the beginning of 2015 the Moscow Zoo has 8856 inhabitants of 1150 species that were delegated to Moscow from all the continents of the world. The museum is located in the old building of the Moscow Zoo, right above Samson, the giraffe. The exposition traces the appearance of the first animals in the zoo with photos and documents. The history of the zoo totals over 150 years — over this period it faced a lots of interesting events, cheerful and tragic, informative and amusing. A separate hall is dedicated to the staff of the zoo, such as scientists, veterinarians, zoologists, and inspectors – those who communicate directly with the animals every day. Both adults and children will make lots of discoveries here, from man’s first contacts with the wild life to the zoo kitchen.
The museum runs by way of organized excursions that cost 1500 rubles per group of up to 10 people.
