Ivan Turgenev Museum is located in an old mansion, where the writer's mother used to live. This is where the action of the famous dramatic story Mumu written by the classic of the Russian literature is set.
Ivan Turgenev is the famous Russian writer of the 19th century. His brilliant stylistics and mastery in depicting contemporary social phenomena had a considerable impact not only on the following generations of Russian writers, but also on the world literature of the first half of the 20th century in general.
In the 1840s the writer's mother Varvara Petrovna Turgeneva lived in the mansion that houses the museum nowadays. At that time the mansion in the Moscow empire style with Ionic columns at the entrance was in the suburbs of the city. Ivan Turgenev stayed there while visiting Moscow. This is when the mansion was frequented by the writer's friends, lots of famous cultural figures of Russia among them.
The old noble mansion with white columns is known among locals as "Mumu's House". This is right where the events described in the story Mumu took place.
The interior of Ivan Turgenev Museum brings its visitors back in time to the writer's life and epoch. The furniture of that time, an ancient grand piano, portraits on the walls, and household items tell a lot about the writer and his guests and the era preceding the falling of serfdom in Russia.
