Garage is a highly acclaimed international expert in the sphere of contemporary art. Its activities embrace exhibition, educational and research areas.
Founded in 2008 Garage was initially located in the building of the Bakhmetyevsky bus garage — hence is its strange name. In 2012 the museum moved to a construction, which was specially created for it in the territory of the Gorky Park. The new pavilion was engineered by the famous Japanese architect Shigeru Ban. The construction was eye-catching but temporary. Now Garage has finally settled down the building of the former restaurant Vremena Goda built in 1968 in the Soviet modernist style in the Gorky Park. Rem Koolhaas was invited to turn the former restaurant into a modern exhibition space. The architect kept a number of interior elements (for example, mosaics and bricklaying) having considerably transformed it for exhibition needs. As a result the building has preserved its proportions and geometry, at the same time got a bright modern look.
Three museum floors with the total area of about 5.5 thousand square meters include five exhibition premises, a lecture hall, a design room, a nursery, a cafe and a bookstore.
Garage carries out many-sided activities. The museum introduces the audience to works of modern Russian and foreign art, encourages domestic artists to take the world stage, carries out research projects, confers grants, organizes lectures, seminars and film screenings.
The Garage Museum of Contemporary Art is located at the address 932, Krymsky Val Street near the Park Kultury and Octyabrskaya metro stations, Moscow.
