It is Russia's only museum dedicated to art objects that surround us in household. A picture painted at the bottom of a plate sometimes happens to be not less wonderful than a fresco in a historical mansion. The exhibits collected in this museum give vivid evidence to that. Various embroideries, tableware, clothes, ceramics and furniture are so good here that one can admire them in the museum for several hours in a row.
The museum exposition consists of several parts. The first and the most extensive of them is dedicated to Russian crafts of the 16th-20th centuries. Ceramics of amazing beauty, colourful sundresses, gold embroidered headdresses, wood carved caskets and furniture in folk style demonstrte that no matter how poor and uneducated Russian peasants were, at heart they always longed for the beauty.
The second part of the exposition presents works by the Russian craftsmen till the 20th century. Here you will see varied furniture, woodcarving and stonecarving, tableware and the richest collection of jewelry by which there won't be able quietly, which hardly any woman can pass by.
The third part of the collection consists of porcelain ware of the USSR era. Here everyone can find both "that grandmother's table set", and designer ware that used to stand on tables of communist leaders.
Besides, the museum boasts an outstanding selection of stone-carved figurines, rare ancient books and an impressive complex of private collections, which always find something brand new to display.
For those who want to study Russian arts and crafts better than an ordinary participant of an excursion, there are special educational programs developed by the staff of the museum. During thematic masterclasses the students get acquainted with this or that subject more closely, take part in a theatricalized lessons and get trained in several folk crafts.
