The State Academic Bolshoi Theatre Will Provide Cheaper Tickets
March 17, 2014 15:14

The management of the Bolshoi Theatre has decided to dismount about 250 seats in the auditorium so that to occupy the vacant space with cheaper standees, as the general director of the State Academic Bolshoi Theatre Vladimir Urin told. “We studied the whole auditorium and found more than 247 seats which provide less than 50% view of the scene. We decided not to sell tickets to these places, to dismount the chairs, and instead to sell standing room tickets. There will also be banquettes, so that people could sit down, once tired” - the general director of the State Academic Bolshoi Theatre said.

The standing room tickets will be significantly cheaper than the usual seats, which will make visiting the Bolshoi Theatre more affordable for the disadvantaged population. According to Urin, he made a proposal to the Mayor’s Office for developing a system of performances at reduced prices for poor people, but the Moscow authorities did not support his idea.

“I know that the Moscow authorities have special public institutions, and I offered to sell tickets through these institutions. But the Moscow authorities formally transferred our proposal to these organizations and told them that they could buy low-price tickets from us. As soon as we are understood by the Moscow authorities, we will immediately begin to work out a system of dealing with the poor” - the general director of the Bolshoi Theater stated.

In addition to the program of support to the poor, the changes in the Bolshoi will also concern its repertoire. According to the words of Urin, a number of performances will soon be removed from the repertoire for the lack of quality. The general director of the Bolshoi promised to publish a list of the removed performances at the end of the season. "I will name these performances, when I disclose our plans for next season. I can only name one of them now – it is the “Nabucco” opera” - Urin noted.
