One of the best choreographic theaters of Russia, the Ballet of Moscow follows conceptual policy based on organic synthesis of classics and innovation.
The Ballet of Moscow Theater was founded by Nikolay Baskov in 1989. The famous singer was the theatre's art director until 2012, when the project was undertaken by Elena Tupyseva, known for her work in the dance theater agency Tseh.
The ballet house has two independent troupes, those of academic and modern dance. However, even in working on classics the theater's management places emphasis on tendencies of modern choreography, thereby using century-old ballet traditions as the foundation for its experimental stage productions. The Ballet of Moscow promotes the idea of maximum genre variety, and courage in selecting the means of expression, as well as visual and musical framing. Experimental performances and modern versions of the academic ballet, high-tech shows and minimalist stage plays — the format of performances is not limited, with only mastery and nonconformist approach to work remaining invariable.
Since the early 2000s the theater has been cooperating with the western choreographers and has staged a number of successful performances jointly with them. Elena Tupyseva plans to go on working on international projects and at the same time develop the Ballet of Moscow as a modern and neoclassical dance centre, which may later turn into an educational institution.
Today the theater is not limited to any particular space since it has no stage of its own. On the one hand, it complicates the staging process, and on the other hand it encourages experimenting with locations, and using the potential and peculiarities of various Moscow venues.
