November 22, 2016 20:17

The Bolshoi Theatre is one of Russia's largest and world's most significant and famous opera and ballet houses. It is a great honor to any theatrical figure to work there and invariable joy for any classical art lover to visit the Bolshoi Theatre.
Mission
The Bolshoi Theatre has always been one of the major symbols of Russia and its culture. It is the main national theater of Russia, the keeper of Russian traditions and the center of world musical culture that promotes the country's theatrical development.
Masterpieces of the Russian musical theater of the 19th - 20th centuries prevail in the Bolshoi Theatre's repertoire, which is based on three main categories. The Bolshoi Theatre attracts the viewers' attention to the Russian classics, including the 20th century, the western classics, with recognized masterpieces of the 20th century among them, and specially ordered compositions.
In contemporary history of the Bolshoi Theatre there are already several compositions created specially upon its order: it is Leonid Desyatnikov's postmodern opera The  Children o Rosenthal, as well as the ballets Misericordes staged by Christopher Wildon, Lost Dreams composed by Leonid Desyatnikov and staged by Alexey Ratmansky, and the danceplay And Then, One Thousand Years of Peace composed by Laurent Garnier and staged by Angelin Preljocaj and performed by the latter's company.
The troupe of the Bolshoi Theatre is constantly in great creative shape,  when performing both on its glorified stage, and at the world's leading musical theaters. Introducing Russian public to achievements of these theaters and inviting foreign stars to participate in its own creative process is another important activity of the Bolshoi Theater.
Foreign spectators, those visiting its performances both in Moscow and abroad unmistakably find a wide range of the Russian opera and ballet heritage here. At the same time the Boslhoi Theatre never fails to give a fresh picture of the actual development of classical music and performing arts in Russia.
Chamber and symphony concerts make an integral part of the Bolshoi's repertoir along with operas and ballets.
Big Stars of Big Theatre
Ballet dancers, opera singers, stage directors, conductors and artists of the Bolshoi Theatre have been repeatedly winning the world's and Russia's highest awards throughout its history. Employment in the Bolshoi Theatre is a peculiar quality label, which honoured Maya Plisetskaya, Galina Ulanova, Roland Petit, Robert Sturua, Alexander Sokurov and dozens of other outstanding figures in the history of world culture.
In addition to that the Bolshoi Theatre broadens the horizon by performing works that are rare for the repertoire of domestic theaters, and by engaging outstanding  soloists and stage directors from abroad. Among them there were the directors Francesca Zambello, Eymuntas Nyakroshyus, Declan Donnellan, Robert Sturua, Peter Konwitschny, Temur Chkheidze, Robert Wilson, Graham Vick, and Alexander Sokurov, as well as choreographers Roland Petit, John Neumeier, Christopher Wildon, Angelin Preljocaj, and Wayne McGregor.
Where is it?
The famous historical building of the Bolshoi Theatre that has been long considered one of Moscow’s main sights was opened on  October 20th, 1856, the coronation day of Tsar Alexander II. Since October 2002 the theatre has got its New Stage. This is where all performances took place during the years of the massive restoration and repair of its Historic Stage.
The theater's buildings are located in the Theatre Square, next to the Teatralnaya and Okhotny Ryad metro stations in the heart of Moscow.
