What is Helicon? Some believe that was the name of an Old Greek mountain, where singers and musicians sacrificed themselves to Apollo and the Muses. Others are sure that Helicon is nothing else but a wind instrument of immense size. But above all this word has long stood for an opera house, which was founded in Moscow on April 10, 1990. This is one of the most visited theaters in Moscow today.
The People's Artist of Russia Dmitry Bertman, the art director and founder of Helicon Opera has staged over a hundred performances in Russia and abroad, including Austria, Germany, Denmark, Ireland, Spain, Italy, Canada, New Zealand, France, Sweden, and Estonia.
The team of Helicon Opera leaders includes experts renowned in their field: the theater's principal conductor Vladimir Pon'kin (People's Artist of Russia), the main artists Igor Nezhny and Tatiana Tulubeva (Honored Artists of Russia), lighting designer Damir Ismagilov (Honoured Artist of Russia), choreographer Edvald Smirnov (the prize winner of international contests), and chief choirmaster Yevgeny Ilyin.
The troupe of Helicon Opera that initially consisted of seven enthusiasts, includes more than 500 people nowadays. It boasts a powerful ensemble of soloists, lots of whom are honored artists of Russia and winners of international contests and prizes, as well as a symphony orchestra and a choir, the musicians of which give concerts at the best venues of Moscow in addition to the repertory stage productions. The soloists of Heliñon Opera extensively perform at the most prestigious opera houses of Europe and America. Almost all of the choir singers are certified as conductors or choirmasters.
For a season, Helicon Opera gives more than 200 performances to the Moscow audience. The present-day repertoire includes more than 75 unique stage productions. Heliñon Opera has always aspired to withdraw from "convenient" and outworn stage solutions. It is favoured by viewers for its surprising novelty and daring design, vivid vocal and dramatic performance, and at the same time staying true to the composer's idea. The hall is always sold out.
Helicon Opera has gained universal acclaim of opera professionals. Nine Golden Masks in a few categories in various years, awards of the Moscow Opera Festival, and the Prize of Russia's Union of Theatre Workers, "Hit of the Season", give strong grounds for it.
