Theatre "Saint-Petersburg Opera" – A New Take on Opera
May 13, 2017 11:13

In this chamber music theater, the audience can re-discover the masterpieces of classical and modern opera in unconventional productions by famous stage director Yuri Alexandrov.
The theater was founded by its present-day art director, Yuri Alexandrov in 1987. In that controversial Perestroika epoch, there was a need for new stage forms, innovative artwork and fresh interpretations. Having turned into the author's creative laboratory, the theater quickly gained fame, won public attention and critics’ accolades as a "live opera house" and "the theater of quest".
In that period critical for musical art, the traditional opera house in many ways was not able to meet the demands of modern reality, while Yuri Alexandrov's productions fully corresponded to the essence of that era.
The theater did not have its own building until 1998, when "Saint-Petersburg Opera" came into possession
of  Baron von Derviz House in Galernaya Street, which marked the beginning of its new life. On the 300th anniversary of St. Petersburg, the new stage was opened with the world premiere of Donizetti's opera Peter the Great.
Since the late 1970s and till now, Yuri Alexandrov has been a stage director at the Mariinsky Theater. His stage direction is full of original ideas, paradoxical and unexpected interpretations, as well as inimitable aesthetics. In his many-sided works there is no canonical view of the opera, since he is fond of bold experimenting with classical opera texts. His stage productions are sophisticated, with lots of allegories and metaphorical moves. With the help of a metaphor, his favorite technique, Yuri Alexandrov externalizes his inner
most, philosophical and poetic vision of art.
Over the past decade, the "St. Petersburg Opera" Theater has unfolded a vast and diverse repertoire. Among its performances there Puccini’s masterpieces (Gianni Schicchi, Tosca, Chio-Cio-san), Offenbach's Beautiful Elena, and Gaetano Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor, along with the provocative Boris Godunov. Version of the Accomplice authored by Yuri Alexandrov and set to music by Mussorgsky.
Every new performance of St. Petersburg Opera makes a significant event in the cultural life of St. Petersburg. Premieres stir up critics’ hot disputes in printed mass media. The audience just cannot stay indifferent to the operas staged by Yuri Alexandrov, so modern and relevant they sound. In every season the theater is nominated for the Golden Mask and other prestigious theater awards.
The opera singers here are young and talented. Lots of them are graduates of the St. Petersburg Conservatory, while many come from other Russian cities - Yuri Alexandrov knows how to discover new voices.

Saint Petersburg Opera Theatre is located at the address: 33, Galernaya Street, next to Admiralteiskaya, Sadovaya, Sennaya Ploshchad and Spasskaya metro stations, St.Petersbug.
