27 April & 24 May, 2018 in Moscow – Puccini’s classical lyrical opera about tragic love based on "Geisha" by D. Belasco.
“It was powerful and majestic. That is what the debut of the Stanislavsky Musical Theater in the Netherlands with “Madame Butterfly” was like. The audience was completely absorbed in the drama by Puccini” (Place de l'Opera, The Netherlands, May 29, 2009).
For over a hundred years Giacomo Puccini's operas have adorned the repertoires of the world’s leading theaters. However, lots of the composer's creations were not accepted right away. One of them was “Madame Butterfly”, which is now considered one of the best creations by the Italian genius. Tickets for this striking opera are always sold out with a huge rush.
As the opera’s storyline goes, a geisha named Butterfly is ready to sacrifice for the sake of love, without sparing herself. However, her lover, a lieutenant of the American Navy, does not appreciate this; moreover, he betrays her meanly and marries another woman in America, after getting married to Butterfly and conceiving their baby in Japan. The heart-broken woman cannot stand her grief and, in desperation, takes her life.
At the Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Musical Theatre, Puccini's opera was staged by director Alexander Titel. Through his eyes, the audience sees the story of Geisha and Lieutenant Pinkerton not as a melodrama, but as a clash of two moral principles. The psychological conflict of sincerity and falseness is brought to the fore in the stage production. To watch this captivating story, turned from tearful melodrama into a real tragedy, it is worth ordering tickets for the world-famous opera "Madame Butterfly".
