Russian Winter Games and Entertainment

A Snowman

When the snowflakes swirl outside the window and the weather is slightly frosty, it's time for winter entertainment. In order to enjoy the winter you need to organize your leisure time in a proper way. This can be done by trying the variety of games on the snow, snowman making and building snow fortress, playing snowballs and sledging.

In the company of friends you can build a snow fortress. You will need joint efforts to build a solid wall of snow that should stand any punches during snowball fights. To build a snow fortress you first need to determine how many people its walls are meant to hide. When the approximate size of the fortress is established you need to draw its construction on the snow in its full size. The fortress can be of rounded, square, rectangular or pentagonal shape - it all depends on the imagination! For achieving the high quality of construction you need to use a kind of "high-tech": the bucket is packed with the compressed snow that will turn into bricks and make up the wall. In the construction of the fortress you can also use snow lumps which can be rolled of the sticky snow. And do not forget about the openings for doors and windows-loopholes. In the end of the construction process of the fortress you can pour water on it so that your construction will stand as long as possible.

The most popular and incredibly funny winter game is called snowballs. This game is played by two teams who throw snowballs at each other. The snow should be a little wet and sticky, otherwise you will not be able to make lumps. The process of snowball fight is a simulated fire fight.

Another favourite game of children is "King of the Mountain", for which you will need a low ice-hill and a team of 5-8 players. One player must climb up the ice-hill and declare: "I am the king of the mountain!" All who disagree with this statement begin to storm the height in order to combat the autocrat and knock him down from the top. He or she who manages to overthrow the king "from the throne" climbs up the “mountain” and becomes the next king.

Making a snowman is a winter game that comes to us from ancient times. The simplest snowman consists of three snow globes. More complex sculptures of snow can represent characters from cartoons or fairy tales, for example, a bear, a horse, or even Baba Yaga! Snowman is a cheerful winter character that requires decorations and attention. You will need the paints, a carrot nose, possibly, big bright buttons or beads, straw, fir branches, old clothes (hats, scarves, and gloves) – everything you find in your house and everything you can donate for decorating a snow sculpture with no regret .

Winter entertainment does not end here. There are a lot of games in the snow, from playing snowballs to different kinds of sports (skiing, skating, ice hockey, snowboarding, etc.), as well as everybody`s favourite ice-hill sledging.
