Russian Scientists Invented Ecologically Friendly Method Of The Oil Spill Cleanup
August 31, 2013 10:51

Russian scientists have invented an environmentally safe and effective method of dealing with the oil spills on the sea surface. They presented their know-how on Asia's largest exhibition of modern science and technologies held in Bangkok during the whole month of August.

The invention called "Moskatov" is a powder consisting of 96% of natural minerals, processed under high pressure and temperature. Zeolite is the main component of this mixture.

"We just spray this powder over the oil spill. The molecules of oil are simply destroyed and converted into particles, which are, in fact, part of any soil" – said Vladimir Lukoyanov, the representative of the "Russian House for International Scientific and Technological Cooperation" association in Southeast Asia.

He illustrated his statement with a little experiment. Oil layer spilled into a glass of water, indeed, coagulated right away after spraying "Moscato" over it. Just in a minute the water surface was already completely clean, and something like a regular marine mud was floating on the bottom of the glass.

"Fish can easily live in this water and feed on these sediments" – Lukoyanov says. According with scientists’ calculations one ton of spilled oil requires about 250 kg of "wonder powder". The cost of "Moscato" is not so high – just about 450 dollars per ton. As per Lukoyanov, imported analogs cost at least 1.5-2 thousand dollars.

In Thailand, Malaysia, same as in most countries of the world, oil spills are cleaned up with special chemicals. So, tons of chemicals were poured into the South China Sea after a recent incident in the Gulf of Thailand. Meanwhile, ecologists warn that reactants cause serious damage to nature.
