New Cancer Medicine Found in Siberian Cave
April 20, 2016 23:08

Experts of the Biology Scientific Research Institute of the Irkutsk State University and their colleagues from Germany have discovered a new strain of bacteria, which are capable of making substances unknown to science hitherto. Among them there are antibiotics that can treat the diseases earlier considered incurable.
Results of the research have been published in the scientific journal PLOS One. Since 2014 Irkutsk scientists have been conducting the search of new atinobacteria strains in specific ecosystems of Siberian caves, which have been least subjected to the impact of external environment for centuries. As a result several strains of ancient bacteria harbouring unprecedented potential have been discovered in the Big Oreshnaya Cave at the 130 km distance from Krasnoyarsk.
"We have extracted ten new strains from waters of the cave lake and the so-called "lunar milk" substance. We have tested them all and seected one for more in-depth study. As it turns out, this very strain can make more than 120 compounds, 100 of which are still unknown to science", - the institute's senior research associate, Cand. Sc. Denis Aksenov-Gribanov pointed out.
Among the above mentioned compounds there are substances, which cope with colibacillus and candida. According to scientists, other compounds generated by these microorganisms may quite as well have properties related to destruction of other pathogenic agents. They assume with utmost probability that among the substances made by bacteria there is also a cancer medicine.
