A split liver transplantation to two adult recipients have been carried out in Russia for the first time, which has saved the patients’ lives, as the press service of the Federal Medical-Biological Agency (FMBA) of Russia reported to TASS. The operation was conducted at the Federal Medical Biophysical Centre named after A.I. Burnazyan of FMBA of Russia.

“An extracorporal (outside the body – note by TASS) split of liver - the division of the organ into two halves outside the body after its explantation and preservation – was performed in Russia. At that, the right lobe of the liver was transplanted to a man, and the left lobe of the liver - to a woman” - the press service reported.

Both adults suffered from permanent incurable disease - cirrhosis. “At the moment, both recipients feel well, and in a week they’ll be ready to be discharged from the hospital” - the press service of the agency added. Split transplantation was accompanied by the rare operation which is extremely difficult in terms of technical execution - complete reconstruction of the two vessels of separated fragments of cadaveric liver, which was also carried outside the body.

According to Russian law, the removal of organs and (or) tissues of corpses is not allowed if at the time of such removal the health care facility was made aware of the fact that the person during his or her life, or his/her close relatives or legal representatives have opposed the removal of organs and (or) tissues after his/her death for their transplantation to recipients.

Organs may be removed from the corpse for transplantation if there is clear evidence of the fact of death recorded by the council of physicians.
