November 29, 2015 20:07

The first face transplant surgery in Russia went well, the Health Minister of  the Russian Federation Veronika Skvortsova reported at the press conference in the RF National Defense Control Center.
For the first time complex face tissue transplantation was performed in France in 2005. Over 40 such surgeries have been carried out in the world so far, with only 33 of them recognized successful.
Veronika Skvortsova explained that though the surgery was carried out more than half a year ago, it is only now that doctors can confirm its successful outcome, "because we had to see the recovery process after the surgery". "Now we can safely state that the surgery was a success", -  she noted.
"We have became the 8th country that managed to perform such a surgery positively thanks to the level of high technologies", Mrs. Skvortsova added.
Preparation for Russia's first face transplant surgery was started back in 2010,  Maria Volokh, the associate professor of traumatology and orthopedics of the Kirov Military Medical Academy reported.
"The face transplant surgery was preceded with thorough work related to legal maintenance, tests in dissecting room and immunological studies of hemi-facial homografting on animals", - she explained.
The Russian military and civil surgeons for the first time carried out facial tissue grafting to a serviceman, who suffered an electric trauma in August, 2012. The surgery that lasted over 18 hours, took place in the Kirov Military Medical Academy in May.
The chief of the head army medical department of the RF Ministry of Defence Alexander Fisun declared that the efficiency of this surgery proves that the Russian military medicine has made much more headway thanks to the use of leading-edge technologies.
