The Earth Is Not Threatened by Dangerous Objects from Open Space
January 15, 2016 20:39

In the near future the Earth is not going to collide with any dangerous cosmic objects, and yet monitoring of the outer space is required, a full member of the Tsiolkovsky Russian Astronautics Academy, Alexander Zheleznyakov states.

The NASA earlier announced establishing the Planetary Defense Coordination Office for protection of the Earth against cosmic threats. The new structure will be responsible for supervision over all the NASA projects on search and study of the comets and asteroids, the orbits of which are close to that of the Earth.

“The asteroid and comet threat is presently irrelevant because there is no data showing that the Earth might collide with a celestial body. But of course such possibility cannot be ruled out in the long term, therefore such works are required to some extent” – the academician said to journalists on Tuesday.

The academician noted that works on monitoring dangerous space objects are being conducted in Russia as well, for example by the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Russian Federation.

Moreover, the new Federal Space Program designed till 2025 provides funds for implementing projects on this subject matter too.

According to Prof. Zheleznyakov, there is no sense in inflating excessive agitation round the "comic" threat for our planet. Instead, we just need to carry out observation of the outer space in order to discern danger in time and prevent it.
