Russian Scientists Designed Model of Space Debris Movement
January 16, 2016 20:45

It will help to reduce the probability of the collision of satellites with artificial objects in the Earth orbit.

Russian scientists have designed a model of the space debris movement, which will make it possible to reduce the probability of collision of satellites with objects on the Earth orbit. This was reported to TASS by the senior research associate of the Zvenigorod Observatory at the Astronomy Institute, RAS, Nail Bakhtigarayev.

"20 centimeter large garbage objects of a Chinese satellite were chosen for the project model. After several years of supervision we defined the scheme according to which it is now possible to predict their further movement. It is very laborious work, but it can show the way to solving the global problem of surplus garbage. The knowledge of coordinates enables us to reduce the probability for objects to collide, and in the future precisely destroy even small objects of garbage", - he said.

Scientists point out that the Earth orbit is being filled with artificial objects in an avalanche. According to the Zvenigorod Observatory, the quantity of space debris in the orbit has increased by 30 percent over the past few years.

“Daily astronomers find three to four new objects, such as remains of satellites and other spacecrafts; due to fragmentation of cosmic bodies they grow in number every year", - Mr. Bakhtigarayev explained. Besides, the space contamination round the Earth in 50 years can significantly impede further space exploration. As the press service of the Central Research Institute of Mechanical Engineering explained earlier, the only way to avoid collision of devices with space debris is an evasion maneuver, which involves unforeseen expenditure of fuel, shortens the service life of the device and can even lead to failure of the flight program. According to the Institute, there can be about 750 millions of artificial objects in the Earth orbit, with only about 17 thousand out of them visible to the Russian experts; only 1 361 of these objects are operating spacecrafts, whereas the rest are space debris.
