June 25, 2016 13:58

The international expedition Arctic Floating University 2016 brings together professors, students and young scientists from 8 countries.

Participants of the 8th scientific and educational voyage to the Arctic, professors and students among them, will reconstruct the ancient landscape of the Novaya Zemlya archipelago and carry out three-dimensional survey of modern Arctic landscapes, the press service of the Northern Arctic Federal University reported to TASS.

Expedition Program

According to the expedition head  and the director of the Arctic Strategic Researches Center Konstantin Zaykov, this year the scientific program of expedition has undergone changes. It is focused on land and coastal, rather than sea studies. "A complex of serious studies will be undertaken jointly with the national park Russian Arctic. They will be dedicated to vegetation and fauna diversity, condition of the coastal territories, and the processes happening on the coastline" - he said.

"For the first time this year there will be a geological and paleomagnetic component of the expedition; it will be engaged in reconstruction of paleolandscape, - Mr. Zaykov noted. - It is very important in terms of assessing the resources of the Novaya Zemlya archipelago, since this geological formation is a conflux of important rare-earth elements".

Besides, 3D survey will be executed. By means of special glasses it will be possible to enjoy the Arctic landscapes.

According to the Northern Arctic Federal University, this time the expedition has a symbolical title - "Unraveling the Mystery of Novaya Zemlya". 56 people from seven countries, such as Brazil, Germany, Indonesia, Canada, Norway, Russia and Switzerland are examining the Arctic archipelago now. The project aims at providing the Russian and foreign young scientists with interdisciplinary knowledge of the Arctic region through demonstration of the natural complex and historical and cultural heritage of the Russian part of the Arctic.
The international expedition is expected to return to Arkhangelsk on June 27.
