Scientists Can Now Find Thrombi by Means of Laser
September 19, 2016 22:06

Russian scientists in cooperation with American researchers have found a new method of identifying blood clots in vessels.
Thrombi are detected with the help of a laser. Results of the research work are described in the PLOS ONE observer.
One of representatives of the Russian group of scientists reported that the new method makes it possible to track the dynamics of thrombi formation in blood vessels during medical procedures and in the postsurgery period. The coauthor of scientific work emphasized that its results will enable doctors to prevent tromboembolic episodes at early stages. After transition to later stages those episodes become deadly to the patient.
Scientists reminded that under normal conditions generation of blood clots in vessels is inevitable since they are responsible for natural stopping of bleeding in case of various wounds and damages. However they can turn into thrombi, which cork the blood vessels thus causing a serious illness and even death if the patient does not get timely medical care.
In the research work the Russian and American scientists studied the possibility of using photoacoustic flowing cytometry to spot thrombi. For this purpose blood cells were coloured with special fluorescent paint and then irradiated with the laser, which made the paint shine.
