New Sensor for Detecting Chemical Pollution Invented in Russia
November 17, 2016 14:48

The innovative binary sensor is based on a complex system consisting of a catalytic part and a high electron density section.
Researchers from the N. N. Semenov Chemical Physics Institute, RAS and the Moscow Physics and Technology Institute (MPTI) have developed a new sensor that is much more sensitive to chemical pollution and explosives than those available now, the press service of MPTI reports. The results have been published in the magazine Sensors and Actuators B : Chemical.
"Properly devised compounding of our sensor enables us to massively scale  its efficiency up and achieve record-breaking response time", - Leonid Trahtenberg, the head of the team, professor of the Chemical Physics Department of the MPTI and the head of the Functional Nanocomposites Laboratory of the Chemical Physics Institute, RAS points out.
The binary sensor devised by scientists is based on a complex system consisting of a catalytic part, which has a high substance (harmful gas or explosives) particle-binding capacity, and a high electron density section, which redily responds to chemical reactions in the catalytic part by changing its conductivity. The changes of the sensor's conductivity signal the detector's contact with molecules of these or those substances, which have to be found.
Further on scientists intend to explore the sensor's possibilities by matching various combinations of components in the catalytic and coductive parts for detecting particular substances.
