Roscosmos will also assist in installing and testing the Phebus device on the spacecraft upon its delivery.
The agreement on Russia's participation in the Phebus project was signed between the Roscosmos state corporation and the National Center of Space Studies of France.
Russia will produce a rotation gear for the European ultraviolet spectrometer Phebus of the joint Russian-European project BepiColombo, according to the website of the Roscosmos state corporation.
The Phebus is an ultraviolet spectrometer designed to measure the composition and dynamics of Mercury's exosphere.
"Roscosmos will provide the design, manufacture, self testing and delivery of the Russian part of the device - the rotation gear - to the French side. In addition, Roscosmos will provide support in the course of installation and testing of the Phebus device on the spacecraft after its delivery to the European Space Agency," - the message reports.
The rotation gear will be produced at the Russian Space Research Institute.
BepiColombo project aims at exploring the surface composition of Mercury and its surroundings, including observation of the planet's side invisible from the Earth.
The interplanetary probe is scheduled for launch in April 2018. Enterprises of the Roscosmos state corporation are involved in engineering of the spacecraft.
