A cooperation agreement was signed by Moscow Mayor, Sergei Sobyanin, and the Academy’s president, Alexander Sergeyev. The Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) and the Moscow government agreed to work together on the scientific and technological development of the capital city of Russia to make it the world's leading science city. The cooperation agreement was signed by Moscow Mayor, Sergei Sobyanin, and the president of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Alexander Sergeyev, at the meeting of the presidium of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) on Tuesday.
"The main point of the agreement is that the RAS will work together with the Moscow authorities towards propelling the scientific and technological development of our capital city. We will try to make Moscow city number one in science all over the world...,” – Prof. Sergeyev said.
The second point of the agreement, according to him, is related to the fact that the Russian Academy of Sciences is in charge of educational activities.
“We want the residents of Moscow to be scientifically oriented so that the cultural level, which in modern society is largely determined by science, was the highest in Moscow,” - the president of RAS noted.
In addition, the RAS and the Moscow government agreed to hold major science related events together. In addition, the RAS also counts on the support of the Moscow government in organizing the celebration of the Academy's 300th anniversary in 2024. Innovative Capital City of Russia
According to Moscow Mayor, Sergei Sobyanin, the RAS is the pride of Moscow, since its main departments are located here, making one-third of the country's scientific potential concentrated in Moscow.
“More than 40 percent of all the patents in this country are registered in Moscow. More than 600 thousand people are employed in scientific, research and hi-tech enterprises. This is enormous potential. Moscow itself, the city’s economy is the largest consumer of innovation products,”- Mr. Sobyanin said and emphasized that the development of science and innovations is of great importance for Moscow.
The new agreement has replaced the agreement signed by the Government of Moscow and the Russian Academy of Sciences back in 2013. This happened before the large-scale reform in the RAS. According to Professor Sergeyev, the new agreement is based on new realities.
