Russian Education Globally

Russia is conducting a consistent policy of integration of national universities in the global education system.

The Minister of Education and Science Dmitry Livanov reported this at the conference in Moscow on December 17. "We need to increase the attractiveness of our universities for students from other countries. Russian universities have to become active players in the higher education market,” the head of the ministry said. The Minister also noted that by December 17 there are more than 100 thousand foreign students studying in Russia, and Russia takes the ninth place among countries with highest number of students studying abroad. According to Livanov, a government program on improving the performance in international rankings under which a number of universities will be receiving financial support in the course of eight years will become one of the tools that aim to boost foreigners’ demand for education in Russia.

"At the moment, the programs of 13 universities are fully approved. At the end of the winter we will considered two other universities and will decide whether they will participate in this program or not," said the head of the Ministry of Education and Science. Open tender for the right to receive a special grant was announced on May 8, 2013 as part of the Decree of the President of Russia from May 7, 2012 on ensuring the entry of at least five Russian universities in the World university rankings's top 100 universities.

The total project budget determined in the resolution of Russian Government is 9 billion rubles. The list of 15 grant seeker universities of Russia was drawn up last July. It includes Far Eastern Federal University, Higher School of Economics, Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology, National University of Science and Technology MISIS, National Research Nuclear University MEPhI, The Ural Federal University named after the first President of Russia B. N. Yeltsin, Novosibirsk State University, Kazan (Volga region) Federal University, S.P. Korolyov State Aerospace University of Samara, N. I. Lobachevsky State University of Nizhny Novgorod; three universities of St. Petersburg – State Polytechnic University, State Electrotechnical University (ETU) and National Research University of Information Technologies, Mechanics and Optics; Polytechnic and State universities of Tomsk.
