Eduard Uspensky is the creator of such cartoon characters as Cheburashka, Gena Crocodile and Matroskin Cat.

1923—The Soviet Government introduces obligatory football training in the Red Army.

1857—The first Russian postage stamp is issued.

1790—Alexander Suvorov captures the Turkish unassailable fortress Ismail.
Ismail is the key point in the Russian-Turkish War. Its fall foreordains the defeat of the Turks.
