A monument to a seal was opened in the city of Arkhangelsk today. This animal has received such honor because its meat and seal oil saved thousands of lives from starvation during the World War II in Leningrad (St. Petersburg) and Arkhangelsk.
The monument represents a life-sized seal, made of bronze, on a pedestal of fair grey granite on a black base, symbolizing the ices and cold arctic waters. The author is an Arkhangelsk architect Igor Skripkin. The city-folk of Arkhangelsk came to the opening instead of the heavy weather.
38 thousand people died by starvation in Arkhangelsk during the last war. The daily allowance for one citizens food decreased to 125 grams bread several times. It was like in Leningrad during its Siege. The meat of seals, obtained in the seas of Barentsevo and White sea saved from the starvation thousands people in Leningrad (the meat was transported to Leningrad with the Road of Life on the Ladoga Lake ice) and Arkhangelsk.
Historians say that the idea of the monument to the seal appeared already in 1946, just after the war. But the monument has appeared only recently.
