Unusual Thousand-Year-Old Tomb of Two Babies Found in Staraya Russa

Archeologists working at Pyatnitsky Pit in Staraya Russa (Novgorod Region) have found remains of two newborn babies buried almost one millennium ago, not at the cemetery as the Christian tradition requires, but outside of it.
The remains of babies were found near an old Russian country estate, in the cultural layer of second half of the 12th century.
The cultural layer right under the unusual tomb has not been investigated yet.
It is the first find of the kind in Staraya Russa.
Diggings at Pyatnitsky Pit this field season started in early July and will be finished in a week.
Out of all the finds researchers distinguish a birchbark manuscript of the 12th century, which has become the forty third one unearthed in Staraya Russa.
