Salvage of Sunken Treasures of Catherine II will Cost ? 80 Million and Take 7 Years
Sunken Ship Frau Maria

The project on salvaging from the bottom of the Baltic Sea of the schooner Frau Maria, which transported works of art for the Hermitage Museum and sank in 1771 at the coast of the Finnish city of Turku, will cost ? 80 million, as the Finnish party assesses.

Half of this amount will be required for preservation of the ship and foundation of the museum Frau Maria. The Finnish party has developed a stage-by-stage plan of the salvage - it is expected that Frau Maria will be taken overland only by 2017, though earlier it was said that it would happen as early as 2010.

The ship Frau Maria sank in the Baltic Sea in 1771. Her cargo hold lying on the 41-meter depth is harbouring paintings by Dutch artists, as well as china and items of decorative art made of bronze and precious metals; the works of art were bought at an auction in Amsterdam.

The crew managed to escape, but lead boxes with the works of art inside sank down to the seabed.

Now the place where the ship sank is marked with anchor buoys, and is carefully guarded from black archeologists.
