Russia Abandons the Struggle for Football World Cup 2022

According to the Russian Football Union, our country has given up a bid for hosting world football championship 2022, because the world championship, scheduled for 2018, became our new aim. General director of the bid, which previously consisted of two bids – world football championships 2018 and 2022, says that the decision is quite logical. Bids for hosting WC 2018 come mostly from European countries, and WC 2022 bids are shared between representatives of several continents. After USA gave up the bid, candidate hosts for WC 2018 are following: England, Russia and joint claims of Belgium/ the Netherlands and Spain/Portugal. As for WC 2022, hosting of this event will belong to one of five countries: USA, Australia, Japan, South Korea and Qatar. The vote to choose hosts for both championship is scheduled for December 2, 1020, and will take place in Zurich. Source: RIA Novosti
