Information on Debts of Russians Can Be Made Public

Website of Russia’s Federal Tax Service appeared to have a bug – information about debts of Russian citizens could have been easily obtained.

The vulnerable point of the website was a service, aimed at helping a user recall his Individual Taxpayer Number (ITN). Getting information on any citizen’s ITN was as easy as entering his name, surname and date of birth. The information leak was disabled only five days ago.

Bloggers were the first ones to detect the leak. They have retrieved information on debts of Mikhail Khodorkovsky, a disgraced businessman, former head of UKOS company. Mr. Khodorkovsky appeared to have a tax payable of 53 million rubles and a fine of 97 million rubles.

Entering of personal information and ITN can help getting information on debts on property tax, transport tax, land tax, and personal income tax. Experts worry that this information can promote a tsunami of fraud.
