Teflon Made of Graphene
Graphene structure

A think-tank, headed by Nobel Prize laureates 2010 Andre Geim and Konstantin Novoselov, modified graphene into fluorographene with properties close to Teflon and ability to withstand temperatures up to 400 degrees Centigrade.

Many attempts have been made to create graphene compounds with oxygen or hydrogen; however, equal distribution of atoms of an “additive” over graphene hasn’t been achieved.

In order to create more stable graphene compounds, researchers suggest using substances, which form stronger chemical bonds with graphene, than hydrogen, for instance. Fluorine is among these substances.

Fluorographene was synthesized by means of a number of chemical reactions under effect of high temperature and xenon fluoride. New substance is as solid as graphene, but conducts no electric current, because its resistance reaches trillion Om.

Fluorographene is a promising material for electronics, since it is transparent and can be used as a super-thin insulating material.
